Author's Notes:story has made up magic rules - i don't think it's a warning per se, but i wanted to state it somewhere, i had a different end in mind, but the boys did not cooperate! though i think for the way the story went this is a good end

Chapter 25

He enters the Nott estate quarter to five and finds Potter already outside playing with the snow. The smile Potter sends his way, as he notices him is rather discomforting.

It isn't untrue, they had been on the way to something four years before. He remembers the small touches, the long looks and the honest words between them.
It also is true that he had thought about Potter, about why they never managed that first exciting kiss. The moments have been there, he has counted them, but neither of them ever took the first step.
And now everything was different. They were different.
It starts with his own bitterness and doubt and ends with Potters loneliness and want for company. They don't align they way they had before.

"Hello Draco," Potter greets him. "So what will this play be about?"

"Good Afternoon, Po- Harry. It's a small play the kids in town do every year about Father Christmas as the personification of winter and hospitality. You will like it," he says, hiding his smile behind his scarf.

Usually most of the kids mixed up their texts, or got it completely wrong, which ended in a lot of mayhem on stage, and laughter in the audience.

"And then you promised me a surprise. I did not forget about it," Harry says and grabs his hand.

"The house is still standing, and so far you still seem to have control over your magic. If you manage to keep it up, I shall surprise you," he says.

The plans are already made, but there will be a lot of excitement going on, and having Harry being careful will be necessary.

Harry nods ones and presses his hand, before they start their walk into town.
He is not totally comfortable with holding Harry's hand, so when they pass the gates, he slowly removes his, and puts it into the pocked of his coat.

They may have been on the way to something four years before. He remembers the small touches, the long looks and the honest words between them.
It's also is true that he had thought about Potter and how he was doing. Or about why they never managed that first exciting kiss. The moments have been there, he has counted them, but neither of them ever took the first step. But as it never happened he doesn't want to rush into it now.
They are no longer the same persons as they were then. Life happened to them.

Harry just smiles and he relaxes a bit.
For a moment he feared that Harry would push him again, and it is a relief that he hasn't.

They have a pleasant talk on their way to the main square , just talking about innocuous things and sharing some easy laughs.
They even have time to get some mulled wine before the play begins. And like all the years before, the kids manage to not disappoint. Soon all the adults are laughing.
Harry's eyes sparkle with the amusement, while his laugh comes from deep down of his belly.
It's a happy sight, and it fits Harry way better then the loneliness he has first seen when he visited Harry in that small room.

And then the smallest of the boys stood in the middle of the stage and with a booming voice and serious expression he says: "That is the true tale of Father Christmas and to all you a good night!" The boy then bows so deeply that he lost his balance for a moment, and the crowd is in stitches when he leaves the stage.

"Oh Draco, did you see that? And the girls mixing up their lines. Oh dear for the kids who were dressed as reindeers. This was so much fun to watch," Harry tells him excitedly.

He nods and soaks in the happiness Harry is radiating. There is also a spark of pride in him, as Harry still manages to keep up his control. He must have practiced quite a bit yesterday and today.

"You knew this would happen?"

"It happens every year, it's part of the tradition. But for such small kids they are doing very well, and they are having fun too, so all is well."

"Thank you. I haven't laughed that hard... I can't even remember when I laughed that hard. Not even when I first heard about U-No-Poo."

"You are welcome. But I must admit U-No-Poo was quite a good marketing strategy," he replies carefully, because he doesn't want to destroy the mood. However with his luck and the way their conversation was heading...
"Come, you did remarkable, and you have very much deserved your surprise," he says, and offers his arm to Harry.

Harry looks at him quite surprised, before he flashes him another smile and takes the arm.
He leads them back to the Malfoy estate. On their way Harry fills the silence with recaptures of the play, and what he all liked best.
When Draco offers the small iron door and lets Harry step in first, he is rewarded with Harry going "Ohh" and then staying silent for a long moment.

"A sleigh ride, in a winter wonderland. Wicket!"

"Wicket? That is the word you go for?" he asks teasingly.

"I- I mean- I always wanted to- everybody always wants too, and to be able to do it. And yes of course there is an element of romance to it, considering that it is already dark, but- but- I mean you know- you said not to push you. Just so you know this count's as mixed signals," Harry huffs and crosses his arms.

Draco makes a fast wand movement and sends a small snowball at Harry's face.

"Again with the uncalled for actions!"

"I was just making a point. I can take a- a friend on a sleigh ride if I want to. Believe me, if it were a romantic sleigh ride you would notice the difference." He uses his most teacher-like voice and then gets on the sleigh: "Are you coming or are you going to stare some more?"

"Coming, definitely coming." Harry replies and gets on too.

As the sleigh sets in motion Harry laughs again. "This is amazing! Did you do that a lot as a child?"

"Yes, with Theo, sometimes with Millie and Pansy too, and if Blaise could be arsed to leave the warmth of the house. Which always would lead to us covering him with snow, since he didn't partake in our snowball fights. Greg was happiest when he could hold the reins, even if the horses do not require any directions," he tells Harry.

"I think I would never stop going arou- is that the Manor? Wow, look at all the fairy lights - did you do that?" Harry's eyes went wide as they came around to see the Manor from the side.

"Wait until you will see it from the front. And no, I did not. The elves went out of their way, as I told them to prepare the sleigh. I must say I am grateful to them, because I was afraid you would not enjoy the scenery, after everything. But we can't really go sleigh riding in town."

"The house did nothing wrong. And by your logic I would have to be afraid of the sight of Hogwarts or the grounds too. It's not easy to go to some places... I don't like the cemetery or the house in Godric's Hollow. But that is more due to the fact that the memories about those places have been dug up by the Dementors and not just been there. They have a cold feeling to it, like my happiness will go out for real, even if no Dementor is close by. It's stupid but I can't help it."

"I'm sorry, I didn't want to ruin the mood, actually I tried hard not to but- "

"No, Draco, no. You didn't ruin the mood, and you know I already forgave you," Harry says and switches sides, so that he now sits next to him. "I want to share everything with you- No, hear me out. Because yes, you are right I'm the all in guy, that is how I live and act, but you are also wrong, because I don't expect you to do the same. I am well aware that you keep your secrets close, and that you will never tell me everything, that is the way you do. I can accept that, if you can accept my way."

"You can accept it for how long? No, Harry. Can we not just enjoy this ride, and the sights and have a nice outing?" he asks softly. With a soft sigh he adds: "How can you imagine us as... well, as lovers I guess, we we can't even be friends?"

"I'm sorry, I haven't thought about it that way... Friends is a good start, I would like that, very much even."
Harry stays where he is, but finally starts to really look around, and then they take the next turn, and the front of the manor comes in sight.
"This is wonderful. Look at all the lights, also it smells fantastic! Getting really hungry here. Do you think there might be some food?"

He sends Harry a small smile, before he nods.
"There will be a dinner of course, can't sent you back hungry, because who knows what you will do." He pushes his shoulder in to Harry's.
"Merry Christmas, though early. But since there might be a rather Christmas fest in the future for you."

"Thank you, Draco. For everything, not just tonight but for giving me back hope, and magic, even wild one. At least it's good at wish fulfilling," Harry jokes. "But be aware I will find a way knock off your socks with your Christmas present! That is a promise."
